Happy birthday America. Let's stop fucking everything up and actually do something right and good and helpful and intelligent for a change. *SIGH*

Well it's another race weekend, this time in Michigan. The track, like most of them is out in the middle of nowhere, about an hour from our hotel in Ann Arbor. Jason's taking the weekend off so I'm stuck with a freelancer who doesn't know his way around very well. Qualifying was rained out so our day got mercifully cut short, but it wasn't a terrible day. Rikki is back and they kept us reasonably busy, which helps. We also got to interview Richard Petty, which was a big geek moment for me. Anyway, I'll keep this one short and maybe make another one later. Sushi tonight, I think. Adios!

So it's another race weekend and once again I'm sitting in this trailer waiting for it to be time for us to go shoot something. I'm glad I only have a few more of these. It's been a tough weekend because I just spent a full month at home and was able to spend a lot of time with Anna and it sucks to be away from her. *sigh*
The race is at Pocono this weekend in Long Pond, Pa. I hear it's hot as all-get-out in Charlotte and yesterday it was very nice here, though it's pushing 90 here and the AC in our trailer is on the fritz. I'm not looking forward to tomorrow's race. The track's huge (2.5 miles) and flat and the new car doesn't provide very exciting racing on this sort of track. They're just going to spread out and ride around all afternoon. There's no good reason for this race to be 500 miles. Blah. I'm keeping my fantasy team the same from last week, which did awesome at Dover and those guys (Ky. Busch, C. Edwards, J. Johnson, M. Truex, A. Allmendinger) have practiced well here. That's the only thing that's going to make this race exciting.
In other news, I've been reading a crap-ton of comic books, primarily Marvel superhero stuff. I downloaded 13 gigs of comics that covers most of the major events in the Marvel universe since the 60s. I'm really enjoying reading them. I just read Wolverine: Enemy of the State/Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and The New Avengers: Breakout, which were awesome. I also bought the Wanted TPB, which I loved, and I'm looking forward to the movie, despite the drastic changes in the storyline and tone. Currently I'm reading Nick Fury's Secret War and I'm enjoying it a lot. The Marvel universe is so badass. As far as new stuff, I've been buying the majority of the Marvel books, trying to get into Secret Invasion, and I'm also reading the two major Batman series. I've also downloaded Y: The Last Man, Buffy: Season Eight, and Runaways. And you'd think that since I've been reading bits and pieces of Preacher off and on since high school that I'd have finished it by now, but nope, so I still have that to roll through. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations of what's good these days? Comics are kind of a crapshoot and I'm just feeling my way around, reading a bunch of stuff to see what I like.
I think we may be done for the day (I hesitate to say this because it always backfires and hours of extra work shows up out of nowhere) so I'll close and maybe post later in the weekend. Hope you're all doing well, whoever still bothers to read any of this.

So here's the first in a possible strand of entries made with my Blackberry. Hopefully it works and I don't spend forever typing and have it not post.
It's race day in Richmond. As they like to say, it's Saturday night short track racing under the lights. I like short tracks cuz you can walk around the infield without having to go forever to get anywhere.
I'm glad I get to go home tomorrow. I hate that I missed Anna's birthday. Last night I went out with Jason, my cameraman, and Riki Rachtman, who used to be on MTV and now hosts all our shows on nascar.com. It was fun but it was a poor substitute for being with real life friends. I wonder sometimes how long I'll be able to stomach being away so much. As awesome of a job I have, the commitment it requires of me and the sacrifice I have to make may be too much. Who knows. I'd be dumb to walk away from this, but at some point the important things like friends, family, and real life have to take precedence over career advancement. Sigh. I don't know what to do. Well, that was a bit melancholy, but I don't feel like it's overstated or exaggerated.
I suppose I'll close now. I was going to abandon this and move to Tumblr but I can't seem to log in over there anymore and I don't like how you can't make comments on people's entries. So good old LiveJournal it is. I may post more later. Race days are usually not so busy. Adios!

[04 Dec 2007|02:12am] |
After showing some restraint in the "give me stuff" department for my birthday I've decided to thow all that out the window and have a list for Christmas. It will however be less obnoxious than lists from past years.

| Big News |
[19 Sep 2007|03:34pm] |

So, after four months of unabashed laziness, sitting around, and blatant unemployment, things are about to change. I've accepted an offer to drive the number 84 Roca-Wear car in the NASCAR Nextel Cup, starting this weekend in Dover, Delaware!
Well, not really. But I am going to be working for NASCAR, specifically their NASCAR Images division, which is like their version of NFL Films. I'm going to be a Digital Assets Media Logger, which means I'll be tagging footage with computer information like who's in the clip, where it was shot, what they're saying, etc. so that editors can narrow down the huge library of footage to find suitable clips for their projects. I start training on Monday. I'm quite excited, as it seems like a nifty company with lots of growth potential and all that and when the NASCAR Hall of Fame opens downtown the company will be moving into their own custom studios in that facility. It's been a rather drawn-out month-long process and I'm glad for the positive outcome. I had to pass an identification test for NASCAR personalities, including drivers, crew chiefs, car owners, and corporate suits, which I failed initially, studied hard and murdered the re-test. I'm looking forward to finding out what it's like to be a working stiff. Also, if you ever need a NASCAR person identified, I'm the guy to call.
Now the only question is whether to wait for my first check to buy my new iPod or just go get it right now. Hmmmmm.

By the way, that's Clint Bowyer in the 07 Jack Daniel's Monte Carlo after he skidded across the finish line on his roof in the 2007 Daytona 500. Carl Edwards is in the top right in the 99 Office Depot Fusion. He did not flip over during the race. Thought you might like to know.

| YOUTUBE BONANZA |
[10 May 2007|09:46pm] |
It seems like I only ever post these days to give out youtube links for my movies. Perhaps I ought to post about other things. But not this time! This time it's all about the movies. I digitized a bunch yesterday so here they are:
Thirst The vampire movie I wrote last fall for CPG. Part 1:
Part 2:
Vampire Odyssey: The Making of "Thirst" Behind the scenes of that wonderful vampire movie you just watched. Part 1:
Part 2:
A remake of the last scene of Halloween I made this for my Horror class this semester.
An Ugly Fact of Life The French new wave movie I made last Spring. Part 1:
Part 2:
So enjoy them. You should also seek out the new Feist record, The Reminder. It rules.
By the way, I graduated from college. Spectacular.

Hey world! I am finished with school. Forever (hopefully). Wild. So here's the Civil War movie I promised everyone. It's called From the Diary of Daniel Tucker and I'm super excited for y'all to see it.

I hope you like it.
In other news I had a dream last night that I was hanging out in some river with some girl on some night and lo and behold some random teddy bear-sized beaver-like animal pops up out of the water with its back to us. We watched it for a bit and then it started floating downstream towards me. It ran into me and nothing happened and then suddenly it grabbed me and it turns out it was less like a beaver than it was like a water-monkey with gross teeth and claws and it proceeded to try to attack me. I finally fought it off and the girl and I scrambled up the super-steep hill next to the river. We thought we were safe. We were wrong. The monkey had followed us and it bit my arm and, despite feeling really bad about doing so, I held it down and strangled the thing to death. Then the girl went back down the hill to the river to meet some friends of ours that had shown up. The hill was really high and steep (like straight down, more of a cliff, really) and I was scared to jump back down and i was stuck. Then I woke up. What a motherfucker, huh? Just thought I'd share.

| NEW MOVIE! |
[22 Mar 2007|03:03pm] |
So I posted this on facebook, but who knows, there might be someone who reads this that doesn't read facebook. In that case, here's the link to my new movie, Time of Day! It's what I've been calling "the bike movie" for about a month now. The assignment was to show an encounter, which I've clearly done, I guess.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUwV_LMVuqI
Jordan, the dude in the movie, came up with a great interpretation of the story. I'd no idea what it was really about, but he claims it's about a guy and a girl he was involved with and they never really got to know each other and that makes him sad. Works for me. Hope you like it. Let me know what you think.
The next one's a Civil War movie! Rock!

[01 Feb 2007|03:17pm] |
Here's my first assignment for my Narrative Production class. It's called "Conversations". The idea was to make a "portrait". I'm reasonably pleased with it despite some obnoxious technical issues. Let me know what you think.

In other news, I'm going to see Lewis Black in a couple of weeks, skiing the next weekend, and a couple of basketball games in there somewhere. This weekend I'm going to try to see Volver, The Last King of Scotland, and Notes on a Scandal. Wish me luck.

I used to be quite capable of riding a bicycle without having my hands on the handlebars. I was once really good at it. Unfortunately when I was in fifth grade I decided to try to go down one of the biggest hills in my neighborhood without hands and, stupidly enough, without feet. I wrecked pretty bad. Since then I have a mental block on taking my hands off the handlebars. I just can't do it anymore.

| there's no good way to end this |
[17 Nov 2006|12:50pm] |
Tonight's the first night of principal photography for Thirst! If you don't already know, it's the vampire movie I wrote and am working on with a bunch of people from the Carolina Production Guild. They've given is $350 to curse and throw blood on people. I just made a whole gallon of blood and it looks badass sitting on my bathroom counter. Here's hoping it goes smoothly, but since it's filmmmaking it won't. It's a rule.
Last night I went to Player's for my pop music class and spent about an hour or so talking to the Italian exchange student. He's a pretty cool guy, despite the fact that that place is not designed for conversation. I also danced with these Australian exchange student girls he knew. Well, I won't say I danced with them, but I certainly danced near them. It's kind of a bizarre place. I doubt I'll go back, but I had a decent time.
So, it's off to get my car, pick up movie equipment, and try to find vampire fangs (fingers crossed).
